Accreditation

The
South African Bee Industry Organisation (SABIO)
and Joan Isham, Badger-beekeeper Extension Programme Coordinator,
Carnivore Conservation Group of The Endangered Wildlife Trustp

"Badger-Friendly"
Accreditation works as follows:
q
SABIO in
collaboration with conservation agencies has adopted a Code of Conduct for
beekeepers.
q
By
subscribing to this Code, beekeepers agree to adhere to law abiding
(it’s legally required for all beekeepers to register) and
environmentally friendly beekeeping.
q
These
beekeepers are then allowed to use the nationally recognised badger
friendly label on their products.
q
Badger-friendly
beekeepers may then be subject to ongoing audits by independent extension
workers. At present these audits are undertaken by the Endangered Wildlife
Trust, at no cost to the beekeepers.
q
On completion of a positive audit beekeepers
receive a badger-friendly certificate.

Accreditation
documents are currently being revised and will be posted when
revisions are complete |
Environmentally
Friendly and Law Abiding Beekeepers are considered
"Badger-Friendly" as they:
-
Do
not kill badgers
-
They
protect their hives appropriately to minimize badger damage, if they
live in conflict areas.
-
Ensure
that their secondary suppliers of honey and bee products also
subscribe to the Code of Conduct.
"Badger-Friendly"
beekeepers may use the the official 'Badger-Friendly" label on all
their products if they wish. Unauthorized use of this label is
prohibited

On
receiving a positive audit report, a beekeeper receives a signed
certificate as proof of "Badger-Friendly" status. If a
beekeeper receives a negative audit report, his/her right to use the
official label is revoked. Beekeepers that have currently been
declared badger friendly are listed in the most recent Badger
Bulletin
